About Darryl Rowe:
Alabama native Darryl Rowe feels it is no great mystery why he ended up singing jazz: He loves jazz and has always been around it. As a member of the Alabama state Jazz Choir, Rowe became acquainted with an instructor from De Anza College in Cupertino Ca, where he sang with Colleges Jazz Singers. Darryl Rowe has won both the Pacific Coast and Fullerton Vocal Jazz awards for outstanding jazz performance. In 1992 the "Darryl Rowe Trio" was featured at the Monterey Jazz festival. We The People is a jazz project that brings together the talents of an interesting blend of musical characters, headed by the velvety tones of singer Darryl Rowe. Darryl was living in San Jose, California, when he was hired to share the stage with Roxanne in Aspen. He sang there in the winter of 1997-98, and began his friendship with Russian-American piano virtuoso Vlad Girshevich and double-bassist David Arend rounding out the group's core, and their first recording entitled "We the People", features the sensitive swing of drummer Jason Lewis.

What Is Jazz?
Mix the soul of blues, the harmony of classical music, the rhythmic complexity of African music and the melodic improvisational qualities of Indian music, and you'll get somewhere near what has become one of the truest and most original art forms America has created. Jazz grew out of ragtime and blues music at the beginning of the 20th century, and has continued to develop under the guidance of visionaries such as Duke Ellington, Miles Davis, and Herbie Hancock, influencing classical, rock, and hip-hop music as well as contemporary art and literature. While it started as dance music, jazz has developed many offshoots that are meant to be listened to closely, with intensely intricate improvisations and complex rhythms justified by a natural, inherent swing.

Notable Artists: Louis Armstrong, Miles Davis, John Coltrane.
